Yesterday blog database issue resolved

On Thursday, Nov 8th, one of our new programmer was working on the blogs database and inadvertently wiped out the title and body of the posts. We had to restore the database from a recent backup and update it with the changes in the database from the backup date. That process took about 2 hours. I was told by our database team that very little of the posts (during that two hours) were lost - but a couple might have been. We apologize for the inconvenience and have now "better trained" our new programmer.

I'm glad that you brought this to our attention, as their seems to have been a bit of finger-pointing around the blogs!

Thank you for the explanation. It's good of you to admit what went wrong and what steps were taken to rectify the situation.

I thought it was humourous, and didn't panic at all, until it came back and everyone went around sayinig it's all fixed.

I am still missing a post.

And I am not happy.

Did you post it during the time the blogs were messed up? I can see if they have it (if so, they will try to restore it... but it might be gone)

Thank you for taking the time to update us, I hope your new programmer was beaten . I found the entire thing amusing causing some great blogs and some funny reading. Next time your programmer makes a mistake how about asking them to accidently upgrade me to GOLD.

As far as I recall, I posted it right after new posts were being made and commented on.

I emailed regarding the post, but have not yet heard back about it.

The truth is...
IF someone DID hack into this site, you'd never tell us.
You couldn't. It might scare many people away. It would be your duty to your company to keep that secret, and that's understood.

SFW mentioned a blog, "Who's your daddy?". And you said the developer made a bad choice in his test.
But that wasn't it. It never says, "You already know who it is". So THAT'S out.

All titles being the same, all content being the same, and no comments allowed COULD be a programming problem.
But the words, "Who's your daddy? You already know who it is", was a hacker bragging.
Why would a developer or programmer even use those words, knowing/thinking that nobody would ever see them?
None of this makes sense.

Many people only want to believe everything is always peachy. But there's many of us that know better and aren't afraid of the truth.

IF...in any way that WAS a developer playing, then he's got a "strange" attitude and should be gotten rid of. Especially if he's new.
But again, why write that if nobody was supposed to see it?

I still think, as many do, that it was a hacker.
Bragging.

We're very glad you fixed it as fast as you did. Cudo's to you!
But we hope you've sealed any holes you've found, too.

In one aspect I can agree with you, but in another I cannot.

Let me tell you, there are some really cocky programmers in this world that would do something like what happened to just proving how good they are to their boss and co-workers when starting a new job. It might not be totally ethical to some people that a new employee would make a demonstration knowing the backlashes that can happen to them; however, in some minds it is a showing of how valuable they can be to a company too.

One of the agencies of the U.S. computers systems were hacked in to several years back by a teenage programmer just playing around and guess who that once teenager was offered a job by and is employed by? The U.S. Government. Of course it most likely was a job offering that could not be refused because of the crime committed.

Dreamlover,
Exactly!
IF..it was a new employee, why wasn't he fired?
With a hacker-mentality, he doesn't belong on this site where he can play games with people's blogs, which are very important to some.
Let that happen again, and I think you'll see many people leave and go somewhere safer.
This company knows that, and just couldn't take the chance of letting him stay.
But he said that this person just needs new training. I don't think so. This guy is good. What he needs is firing.
But either tell us it was an employee showing off, or tell us there was a hole somewhere that's now fixed.
We're adults.
We can deal with either of those answers.
But a programming mistake?
I don't think so.
Right now, many of us are betting on a hacker.
Of course, some people believe anything.

I, too, have a bit off topic question. It's about the abuse team. Now I am aware that out of all the sites, affiliates, etcetera, associated with Various Inc. that there are still only 200 employees; minusing out needed administrative staff and such there can't be that many employees left in number to staff various support positions such as Abuse. They are trying, from what I see, especially lately when it's been a bit more than overwhelming for them I'm sure due to the general attitudes in the blogs.

Okay, that's the background/startup part. I just recently upgraded to Gold. It's sort of 'cute', because last time I was on this site as a paying member was before the blogs were on here. As an excomputer tech it's always fascinating to me to see what does what and why, including the different 'perks' and such for different levels of membership. {It would be nice if someone could update y'all's page on that, btw, since so much has been added/upgraded for different levels lately.} Everything was interesting and I have been 'playing' with respond and such. Okay, hunky dorey and all that. Today, while I was on site all the sudden it was as if everything was trying to lock. Being on voice at the time with a friend he went to 'my' part of the site -- and I was gone, poofed right out of here. I get on the telephone with Billing who sends me over to Abuse.

A while back I had talked to an Andre, who was kind enough to answer/explain a few things that I had wanted/needed some more in depth information on: such things as what constitutes abuse, exactly. He did explain such things as handles which are obvious as when they are used when someone is trying to harass another member, but he also said that included even mentioning another member so that they could be identified along with some other things of that sort. Okay, not in the TOS like that, but understandable enough so I don't cross any lines; that's what I want to know all about, because I do like this site. Today, when I received the email that my recently acquired Gold membership had been temporarily and/or permanently suspended I 'lucked out' and got the employee of this site who sent me the email stating all this.

Henry S. from your Abuse team wrote in the original email to my outside account that my suspension was due to my sending an email that was abusive. However later in the email as well as on the phone he said: In an email. No, not in an email; I supposedly abused someone on a blog. No, not that; it was on my last posting. First he said it was because I called someone a "fucktard". {I did a quick search just now and in the last day and a half on the blogs there are no less than 250 'unique' uses of the word "fucktard" in Blogland.} Then he said it wasn't really that, it was the post itself, that I was harassing the member funintheday2006. At this point I had to have Herman S. hold for a minute because I had laughed so hard that tea shot through my nose; thank gawd for being American, so at least it was cold tea. I found out a bit later that the post had actually been deleted by the Abuse team. When the stinging died down a bit enough for me to talk again I explained to Herman S. that all he needed to do was to look at any of the recent postings on that blog as well as the majority of postings on my previous blog to see that funintheday2006 has ASKED me to 'abuse' him; I think he likes the attention, but at the very least he thinks it is all funny/a big joke as do I when he is 'harassing' me in the blogs. We cross post all the time, doing different 'stuff' to each other. When I told Herman S. that his coworker in Abuse, Andre, had told me that as long as it was all in fun and definitely not harassing {as in the bloggers are aware of what is going on, there is no malice, etcetera} that it was quite all right to make such joking posts and comments/responses. Herman S. told me that "Andre" was wrong.

As I was blowing my nose Herman S. THEN said it was because I posted a PICTURE of another blogger on my blog. I did tell Herman S. that the CEO himself {on this blog somewhere} said that the reason that feature was programmed into the blogs was for that very reason, so others could post the pics in the different blogs as illustrations in stories, contests, and other 'fun' activities. It was an excellent upgrade to the service/bells and whistles, btw. It still all boiled down to the fact that I had to respond to an email from the Abuse team/Herman S. saying I wouldn't do it again. First I would like to know: What exactly do I need not to do again? I have been making posts for other bloggers' information as to what is and is not considered harassment on the blogs and in this site and affiliates in general, so if I could find out I would update the information. {I was also wondering if somewhere on the site there was at least a post explaining the recent changes in some services depending on level of membership and all.} I did ask, to make sure, that it wasn't a mixup in a recent email sent to abuse where another member was reporting someone who was abusive on my blog but who was not me; of course my handle and blog were mentioned to abuse in that email because that is where the abuse from the other member happened. With their workload I could see a simple mistake like that happening, but Henry S. said no. I have, with each email sent to Abuse, asked for clarification but it seems they are not quite sure what to tell me, nor about which incident that didn't actually happen anyway. The following is the email that I received from "fun" when I got back on site telling him what happened today.

Sender: funintheday2006
To: AmericanBaroness
Date: Nov 16, 2006 5:44 PM EST
WTF???? ME, REPORT YOU FOR ABUSE?? FUCK OFF YA DAFT GIT, weve been abusing each other for months, and WILL continue to do so.

You have my express permission to abuse me, post any pic of me you want to and say what the fuck you want about me. You can also copy/paste this email and send it to abuse.

I, THE FUN GOD OF BLOGLAND HAVE NEVER REPORTED ANY OF YOUR PROFILES TO ABUSE AND IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THEN THEY CAN KEEP THEIR FUCKING NOSE OUT OF MY BUSINESS. I WILL DEAL WITH YOU IN MY OWN WAY, IF I WANT TO, WHICH IS UNLIKELY. IF OTHERS DO NOT GET THE HUMOUR IN OUR EXCHANGES THEN THAT IS A PERSOANL PROBLEM THEY HAVE, NOT ME.

SO GET BLOGGING YA BITCH

OH, AND YOU STILL OWE ME A SHAG

D
XX

So, I know that as CEO you are way too busy for this piddling happenstance, but I was wondering if someone of the 200 could explain to me exactly what it is that I am supposed to have done that would violate the TOS. At the very least I was hoping someone could narrow down the did this no did that no did...so that I could at least figure out if I actually did do anything and what it was and how. BTW, since I'm here, I'd like to mention that I am currently on dialup; the posting speed is kicking ass lately including the updates to comments being seen on the other blogs; I do appreciate that. I still volunteer for one of those 3 person blogger teams to help abuse out, too; could always have an overseer such as...GoddessOfTheDawn performing much as a Chief Justice type of thing. Hope this message isn't incredibly long, but I couldn't think where else to contact since Customer Service would send me to talk to Abuse and that's where the confusion is from at this time. Thanks for any information on this in any way.

That is my post that vidi is talking about... I have been hacked by this Spector and I will continue to post until you do something about this culprit.... whoever he may be. There are a few men on here that troll for no other reason than cause mischief. The Dutch blogger came to me with a fake after he felt jilted by me asw a woman from Switzerland... which when I blogged that I knew who it was, he deleted it but the blog community would not beieve it could be such a sweet guy!

You may ask why is he targeting me? Because I sent him my profile on an email.... with the attach profile button. He felt I led him on. Oh bother... what is life on here but fancy... I know it is him... the spector of my blog and he tries to make it look like it is another man who is also a friend of his on the blog.... they are both immature twits.

I do not see a single response on this post so I guess you think this is a done deal. Well, I am quite sure "WHOSE YOUR DADDY" was done by the dutch hacker... and the problem I see is that your security cannot stop this guy from wreaking havoc on your blog... legally or otherwise... so you ignore him because he is only bothering bloggers. Do you care to know his name? I do! I might not know his name but I know his handle. And the cover up saying it was a mistake in the office... sure... Why does this hacker use "WHOSE YOUR DADDY" when I blogged with that title about his little ass!

L'Oracle de L'Amour

Now I will probably get more harrassment which will send through the roof. His LA friend is just the patsy he needs. Pitiful... some of us have loftier puposes on these blogs... and can be taken somewhere else.

Hi again

I am not getting any satisfactory help and your team will never tell me who the perp is so it gives them an open door to reek havoc within a loose security system. Someone mentioned it would be great if you all put up a blog that listed the profiles of people who have been banned. They need to be outed, or they just get a new profile and start all over again. There are many known abusers in the blogs, yet cries to the A F F are ignored. This all is very distracting.

I do have one suggestion that will fleece a few coyotes. When someone enters a blog from a link have them entered on the "Who is visiting you list" then we can see everyone who visited us for the day. Keeping us private to where we are going on the site only gives the ones who are hurting the site invisibility and an ability to maneuver around to create the irritating little problems without knowing who they are. We do not need to move around invisibly and if we were visible I think we all would stop reading blogs of people who irritate us and visa-versa. Transparency has its place even in a covert blog space.

Just a thought that would help.... is anyone reading these comments to help?

See ya next year... I am not going to stop until I get some answers... mwah ha ha!

Squeek Squeeeeeek!
