A HOCKEY SHOOT-OUT

Above is a photo of not me taping my stick in the locker room of my beloved ice hockey team, Nottingham Panthers! I was preparing for an interval shoot-out against a twelve year old girl. All I had to do was fire 20 pucks into the net in one minute. I had prepared for my moment of hockey fame. I chose my footwear carefully, I decided to gently slide the puck into the net and I chose not to look at the puck after I had hit it to save time. Victory was going to be mine. What could go wrong?

I wore trainers that I had to play football on an artificial pitch thinking they would give me the best grip on the ice. Before I went onto the ice, I was told they were the worst footwear to wear. I should have worn my normal shoes. I was sliding all over the place as I hit the pucks.

Also, I didn’t realise that ice hockey sticks have a curved blade. When I hit the pucks, each puck went well to the left to where I aimed. Because I didn’t look at the pucks after I hit them, smugly thinking I had scored each time, it took me a while to realise I wasn’t scoring. It’s only when I heard the groans and not the expected cheers of the crowd that I realised all was not going to plan. It was all too late. I got whipped by a twelve year old!

My favourite ice hockey player is Brandon Benedict, a Nottingham Panthers forward – see photo below. He is not the most skilful, the fastest or the toughest. He is more of a gritty player that does a lot of the dirty work - checking opposition players, digging out the puck from the boards and chasing the puck when the opposition is in possession. He is a high energy player who often changes games by getting the puck and setting up other players to score.

When Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher once said of Willie Whitelaw, one of her loyal cabinet ministers, “Every Prime Minister needs a Willie.” Brandon Benedict is Nottingham Panthers’ Willie!

Have you ever smashed a puck into the net?
Who is your favourite soports person?

I agree with AC...that is not you!! not enough chest hair! and that is not a curved stick.. I have scored a few but most of the time I tried to stop da puck from entering da net!
I have several sports that I have a favorite in, but to pick one would be retired Toronto netminder Johnny Bower!

You're quite right, it's not me. The exclamation mark was supposed to signify that, but it was perhaps too subtle of a disclaimer given a few comments received. I've now edited the post to make it clearer it's not me.
Happy HNW!

I gotta say that I know people are going to either
Make fun of the sports I choose or they will be honking
Salacious thoughts-
Gymnastics - I grew up in that sport and the men are all
So cut and strong and it left me with great flexibility.
Now it's swimming- I like being wet!

That pic at the top is not of you, dear S... I've never been near a hockey puck.

My favourite sports person is Callan Ward from The Greater Western Sydney team in the Australian Football League. He's such a hard campaigner.
I know it's not me but I've learnt from this post, despite the exclamation mark, that others don't know it's not me. I need to be more careful!

Happy HNW. Kisses & hugs Cinn

Dear S, an exclamation mark denotes an exclamation (an excited statement), ie : Holy Cow! It does not, however, denote a wry, playful deception. I payed extremely close attention to the science of punctuation at school and had another refresher course about 20 years ago when I augmented my education at college. I'm surprised that you would think to use punctuation in that way.
I was using an exclamation mark as a stylistic device rather than as a grammatically correct punctuation mark.
Sometimes when I write my blogs, I assume that people will know what I mean. In this case, I was wrong. I will now stick to the diktats laid out in Fowler's Modern English Usage.

I played the game, but not sure how easy it would be to shoot in street shoes.

I have to say my favorite athlete is / was Mark Messier. He helped bring the last Cup to NY

Thanks for your post.
Mark Messier was a great player. In the UK, we occasionally get ex-NHL players playing. Also when there's an NHL shoot-out, many NHL players come over. A few years ago Nick Boynton played for my team, the Nottingham Panthers. He was amazing and went on to lift the Stanley Cup for the Chicago Blackhawks.
