Being Open Minded     Being open-minded is a phrase often tossed around, especially on a site like this. But what does it really mean? Are you willing to try anything? Are you willing to toss aside all pre-conceived ideas, values, moral beliefs? To me, being open-minded is the willingness to consider new or differing ideas and opinions. However, It does not oblige me to agree or consent. |

Open-minded is an extremely subjective term. Some people like to think they are open to new things and ideas, but most do not like change. People who profess to be very open-minded say no more often than not. I tend to be the opposite. In the heat of the moment, I have a lot of trouble saying No...

I agree that open minded means hearing or seeing something that you may not know about, thought about, tried or even seen before and being accepting that it may be for some or yourself BUT it does not as you said imply that I have to see it, do it or really know all there is to know about it. A closed minded person for the opposite, I think means one whom is set in his or her ways, only thinks one thing and is not open to any other thoughts or version of their way of thinking or comfort zone and will not engage in conversation or deed outside of that. Though my openness does not mean I will break laws, harm others or do evil deeds, I would say I have been and still am open to most conversations, thoughts and some actions when I think wise, fun or educational.

Open minded is just another term that is thrown around today mostly by people who aren't that way. There are a lot of terms that are thrown around these days that most people don't even know the meaning of but still toss it out there. I personally don't claim to be open minded but instead claim to be after the truth. I'll research a variety of sources on different subjects to figure out the truth. Basically everything is like an equation that contains many variable but also has certain constants. You take away the many variables you will end up with the constants and therein lies the truth. Life in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

I have definitely become more open minded as I get older. Been to oasisaqualounge and done things I never thought I would do. Looking forward to more.

I am not open minded. I am of my own mind. If I don’t like it or agree with it or condone it, I am of my own mind to not engage or agree. Not someone’s take on it. I see the term open minded used a lot in the sex scenario. As if you wont do certain things you are closed or frigid or not exciting. I guess I am not a fan of the term.

I love these thought provoking blogs. I’d like to say that I am open-minded but in reality I am not sure that I am. I am extremely intolerant (closed-minded) of those who would deny any one the right to live the life they choose for themselves. But I cherish the opportunities I have had in my life to live and work and travel throughout a large part of North America – the places I have seen that I did not know existed; the people I have met along the way; the lessons I have learned – both personally and professionaly. To borrow a few words from Jimmy Buffett – "Some of it's magic, And some of it's tragic, But I had a good life all the way", and I believe that is because I embraced the opportunities that presented with an open mind and open arms.

To me being open-minded is to not assume that something you haven't seen or tried is crap. To give somebody else's "weird" way of being or doing things a chance. It's not a bad thing to overcome familiarity bias. I'd modify the one saying above to "open your mind before you open your mouth to criticize."

I like the way positively4you said it that she is "I am of my own mind". I do consider myself open minded. However, I disagree with the second quote and that's where I like what positively4you said if she doesn't like or agree with something. Just because I dislike something doesn't mean that I'm not open minded. We might have different opinions on something but that doesn't make you or me close minded. We have two lives, and the second begins when we realise we have only one - Confucious
