When you take your lunch and your coworkers have jokes!! I came back from lunch today to discover Joey staring very intently at me and Phoebe looking off in disgust.  I laughed so hard I was certain I was going to piss my pants. God help me.... But I love those fucking googly eyes! This may very well be my new thing.... I'm going to have to buy myself some googly eyes. In other news... I had my quarterly self review with Boss #2 today. Ugh... I think you all know from previous posts just how MUCH I love those things! I can't think of anything more rewarding than discussing my ability to manage ambiguity and facilitate communication during the trying times of a pandemic! I managed to exceed every metric for training, hiring, and retention that I was being held accountable for... so of course I only got a rating of 'Achieving Expectations' for my review. I love it when your boss sits there and sings your praise and thanks you for all the amazing things you do for everyone each and every day and then slaps you in the face with.... Achieving Expectations. That whole... 'There's no room for improvement' philosophy is bullshit. I'm just going to leave it at that. Happy Thursday! |

That's sad... But you are 100% accurate. I know for a fact that it's a numbers game as I see the numbers. A certain number of people can receive the top raise rate. (For my level of professionalism. I am lumped in with leadership staff.) Last year it was 3 people for our store. A certain number of people must be given the bottom raise rate. Last year it was 2 people. The rest got the median raise rate. Last year, it was corporate who decided who got what.

I've never understood the review process and how it's supposed to do anything other than annoy the piss out of the reviewee! If your boss is happy with your work and sings your praises to your face, then how the hell is "achieving expectations" supposed to convey that? Were they severely curtailed in the number of adjectives they could use in the review process? Achieving expectations makes it sound like you do the bare minimum to get the job done and then just....stop. You've met expectations, so why do more??? Assholes.....

Bought my niece a bag of assorted googly eyes for her birthday one year, she loved them. As for reviews, I despised them. We were graded 1-5 each year - 3 was doing your job and no more, 1 was better have your CV ready, 5 was exceptional. For one year I was awarded just a 2 which I objected to but they refused to change it. However, it didn't put me off and I kind of put the effort in the following year. At the end of year review, my line manager awarded me a 4. However when senior management got together to discuss all reviews, I was downgraded to a 3 as "You cannot go from a 2 to a 4 in one year".  Show me where in the rules it says that? I left a year or so later.

They actually do have a training course our leadership staff has to take on employee and professional development standards. There's more to it than just effective evaluation of your employees, but that's the point of the class.

It is just like life, we all got to deal with them. Been a good while since I had one of those and the last one I got was as yours, " meets expectations" I turned in notice and never looked back.. I did work till I was 68, thought I had to, now I know I wasted several good years.. Just grin and bear it. Smile and look ahead.. knowing that Boss #2 has to answer to some one!!! maybe he is in the same boat Just be safe, stay warm, although we almost got spring here this week.........

The reviews are rigged to raise you as little as possible if at all. Its all corporate bs. Unless you are a politician or a corporate biggie. The phrase” be happy you “have” job, just grinds my gears. No m’fer, be happy you have me in this job.

I wouldn't expect much from my supervisor, somehow I sent him an inappropriate text, TWICE in the last month. He says he's not going to do anything because he likes my work, but I don't see any promotions in my future, EVER.

I never liked my reviews either. The only up side was that each time I got a review I was always bumped up into another pay scale. But in the end I was still underpaid. Yah... Cause THEY know what our work is like on a day to day basis.

Now McLade, in your quest for the googlies, just remember we poor fellas who think your eyes are quite gorgeous as they are!! Your staff review sounds like a load of nonsense.......sometimes we do it only for the love of the job I guess! I have experience with rating systems similar to achieving expectations. Exceeding expectations in my systems required that you had goals that could be achieved in that category. For example, employee retention for 1 year is over 90% to exceed expectations, with 80 to 90 being the achieving expectation. That said, I am not sure that retention is solely your responsibility unless it is for the employees that you directly supervise. I can see that if you are making job offers that you have a part of retention, but what happens when a supervisor and an employee do not come anywhere near the loose mesh needed to keep the employee? And how about an update on the woman that you hired recently that had the positive attitude amid setbacks that left both parents jobless?
