Service with a smile I am sure most of you would know that I work in the airline industry and every customer expects the pearly white smiles and a pleasant demeanor . Dont get me wrong I do love my work and I am a very happy person , but lately I have been having some down days and I really dont want to be all bubbly etc ... many of you I am sure are part of the service industry would have those days. So when next you see a flight attendant who greets you with " Good morning Sir/Maam " with a beeming smile .. please take a short second or 2 to smile back and say hi ... behind that smile maybe a sad girl just trying to get through the day. |

Samantha, You have my complete sympathy and I know the feeling having made over 1,500 flights as a passenger. We both know that not all flights go to plan. Mechanical failures , turbulence, full flights just to name a few and then there are the passengers of which the noisy, expectant, flatulent, moaning, sick and sometimes drunk few spoil it for the rest. Not to mention the occasional "over friendly" passengers - I once saw an SQ gal slap a passenger for pinching her ass (both were Japanese). He was drunk and she was livid but guess who was reprimanded...... On a delayed flight out of London the crew were exhausted (and almost out of hours) but one Indian passenger was being a pain. He demanded to know why (after 10 hours of flight) the stewardess was not smiling at him, I was furious with this guy and got up and gave him a long lecture in being polite. He sat rigid in his seat for the rest of the flight and I did of course get a warm smile when I left the flight. So from the rest of us passengers, we do appreciate what you do even when we are grumpy, tired or sick. Personally I'll redouble my efforts to smile and show appreciation

I couldn't imagine doing that kind of job where you have to be smiley all day every day and the slightest off moment could cost you dear. Everyone has a bad day so I wouldn't think less of someone doing their job and just for a moment the facade slips for some reason I don't know about.

I always greet the flight attendants. I think it helps to make the trip a bit better.

Hi Sam, sometimes daily routines, in specifically the service branch, blend out the individual mood and feelings of the day...just try to get over those days...even others don't bother (and you can't really blame them being caught in own daily routines and mood)...try to find out the smallest exciting thing on such a day giving you a smile...and always look back to this until the next smallest exciting thing pops up...then you will, in the end, end up with a miracle - a smile coming from the bottom of your heart even if its a bad day..... Wishing you lots of exciting moments and little miracles...and a smile coming from your heart in darker days...making your days become a bit more bright...and giving you a healthy smile not just for the sake ofyour service!

Hi Sam , I too have to deal with a lot of people as well in my field and always have to be up-beat even when I'm really not... We all have those days but I bet after someone sees your beautiful smile, their day always gets better  for you my friend if you ever need it you can always have my extra smile in case xxx

hi Sam... i do greet them and many a times when they are sitting in front of my seat i do have a habit of asking them about their life etc... in-fact have recieved many things complimentary due to such things.... i just love talking to people on flight wether it passenger or crew or anyone... and i make them smile...

Completely agree! We both have worked in the service industry, and we both know how hard it sometimes to keep the doldrums of life from showing or oozing through with our work interactions. We both prefer to interact with, be light hearted, positive, and thankful to those who work in the service industry that we interact with. Especially when you can see that the smile is a pasted on cover for something internally they're struggling with. Levity, goofiness, and appreciation are always the order of the day!!

I have traveled A LOT on various airlines over the past 2 decades, for business and pleasure, and am Always grateful for the warm welcoming smile and attentive service provided by the cabin staff. I applaud the way you manage to maintain such a pleasant and caring demeanor, especially when some passengers are experiencing annoyance and frustration at the processes of getting to and through the airport in order to finally sit in their seat. I hope I can have a chance to thank you in person some day soon

yeah service personals deserve a lot more thanks, gratitude and, may i add, higher salary than the current one now. hope u get a proper bonus, and most importantly, more thanks and gratitude at work!

.... I am sure all the folks on your flights feel a wee bit happier when they gaze upon your smiling face.... and yes, we all have those days..... but sometimes even faking it can lift you up if you think about how silly it is..... spring in coming.....
