 Our sense of community drives us to bend, flex and repress....all in the name of dove-tailing relationships.

My sense is that your partner was finally able to acknowledge his desires and realities and articulate them to you. The resulting "truth vomit" appears to have struck a responsive (albeit hurtful and tentative) chord.

What to do? As you observed, your dynamics have been altered. The inertia that has sustained you has been both inflected and energized. In short, the shock and pain have been absorbed. Given your *curiosity* (assuming all other considerations are neutral, if not positive), I would encourage some exploration, as it also brings with it the possibility of personal growth.

Not to minimize or sound transactional, but to my mind, the rewards in going forward together (for at least a while longer) outweigh the risks.
