 I'm not sure how we collect points 'tho I've also collected 80 so far without knowing why either; might be some for each Friend request accepted 'tho? Or maybe for each blog posted, ('tho not comments sadly).
I do see many Standard female profiles which say that they need points to message as they can't even see messages or profiles, which makes me wonder why they even signed up!

 click on ur points amount and it will take u to the points page, tells u how to earn and what to spend them on,,, Standard members cannot even chat with anyone unless they use points to pay now,,, thats y a few of us ladies do giveaways on our blogs,,, mostly to help standard members use the site easier
