Mistakes Always Have A Cost

Although, not everyone likes to admit it, everybody makes mistakes. There’s no doubt the consequences can vary in severity, and they aren’t all measured by dollars and cents.

Here are a few famous examples:

Blockbuster Turned Down Netflix

Netflix originated as a snail mail DVD rental subscription. It has since evolved into a powerhouse. Blockbuster Video didn’t see its potential when Netflix wanted "to." get into business with them. In 2000, Netflix came to Blockbuster with a proposal "to." take care of the digital aspect of their company while Blockbuster would operate the brick-and-mortar component. Blockbuster responded with a resounding “No”. Now the store in Bend, Oregon is the only one left operating.

Lost In Space

Ever lose your sunglasses or a set of keys? It can be frustrating and, somewhat costly. Imagine losing a “$125M” Mars Orbiter. That’s exactly what happened in 1999, when NASA made a “metric mistake.” Lockheed Martin engineers used English measurements (inches, feet, etc.) in their calculations. NASA however, used metric calculations (centimetres, metres, etc.). Because of this, navigation information couldn’t properly be implemented and the orbiter was lost!

Fight or Flight

Savvy customers are getting more and more comfortable booking their own flights online. In “2006.”, the airline Alitalia end up footing the bill when an error on their website allowed customers "to." book “$39.” flights from Toronto "to." Cyprus (it was supposed to read “$3,900”). Two-thousand tickets were sold before Alitalia could correct the price online. Rather than dispute it with customers, they chose to honour the cheap tickets for a cost of “$7. Million.”

Turning Down JK Rowling

Twelve publishing houses rejected JK Rowling's Harry Potter manuscript before Bloomsbury finally signed her following the advice of the company chairman's eight-year-old Alice.
The books were subsequently translated into over sixty languages and have earned Rowling a reported “$1.”Billion.

Decca Records

In 1962, record label Decca were looking to sign a new up and coming band. They auditioned two young bands at their studios in London. They picked Brian Poole and the Tremeloes , saying “guitar groups were on their way out”. The one they rejected? A four-piece outfit from Liverpool known as The Beatles who went on to sign with George Martin at Parlophone―a part of EMI records.

Wrong Academy Award Winner Announced

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Bonnie and Clyde, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were picked "to." announce the "2017." Best Picture winner. Unknowingly, they were incorrectly given the Best Actress Award envelope. A confused Beatty saw Emma Stone’s name and “La La Land,” and handed the envelope to Dunaway, who then announced the musical as the Best Picture winner.
The “La La Land” cast took the stage and producers began their speeches. But they stopped midway when they realized their error. They called up the team from "Moonlight" took the stage and accepted their award.

It would be easy for me to say that my biggest mistake was saying "I Do". All the signs were there that it was the wrong choice. However, I didn't back out and went ahead with the wedding. I choose never to look back with regret and to learn from everyexperience.

Are there decisions or errors you have made that you can look at differently now?

re: error fares Nowadays they'll cancel that ticket as soon as they realize their mistake... even if it's right before the flight or worse, in the middle of your trip for your return flight! Guess you could say they got smart after a few 7 million dollar fiascos and added some fine print!

We all make mistakes on a daily basis. Like the proverbial *death and taxes* they are an inevitable fact of life. As you point out, the challenge is to set our ego aside and turn them into teachable moments.

Just as pragmatic is acknowledging that failure is always an option and anticipating its consequences, including potential collateral damage. Preparation may not full mitigate the blow-back, but it helps soothe the pain.

I don't know what mistake is the one I'd want to take back.
There are just so many. I'd like to just believe that every mistake comes with a lesson.
I m still learning..?

Oh man! turning down the Beatles in my previous life. I will never let that one down. (only joking)

I've made so many mistakes in life, but I do feel that they are lessons learned.
Similar to you, I feel that a big mistake was the time I got married. (now I'm divorced) I hope to look for love again, but next time I will communicate what is important to me.

Wow! That could be scary as the traveller. No doubt, a $7 Million dollar error will make a company extra diligent with the fine print!

No, we don’t have the ability to “undo” the past but we can learn from it so as not to repeat it.

Yes - it's important to learn from past mistakes.
If I hadn't gotten married, I wouldn't have my two children. The marriage didn't last but everything that happened since then, has contributed to the strong, resilient woman that I am today. Perhaps you will find love again; often it happens when we aren't looking for it.

And those were only a handful of some of the “famous” ones. As for my admission, the costs were much greater in ways that can’t be measured.
